When to stop...

Find out when to turn off Photoshop, or put down your brush, or pencil. Know when the image is done ...when to stop.

A few days ago, someone asked me a great question. They wondered how I knew to stop working on a particular image. With how much time I spend in post-production, knowing when to stop working on a project is a crucial stage with my art, but I don't believe there is a specific fine line.

Though I obviously change my mind quite often with my images-- and even though I usually try to plan out each production to save time with post work, I always have a very detailed picture in my head, and I do get to the point when I can sit back and say, I'm done.

Leonardo da Vinci was known for his "unfinished" work. Though some WERE unfinished, many received just the right amount of attention needed to create the masterpieces we still enjoy today.

Too much, is too much, and knowing when to stop is VERY important. It all comes back to CREATIVE VISION. This is also the reason why copying another's work only takes us so far. I don't believe we can "learn" when to stop...completely that is, that's part of RAW artistic talent. That's how a sculptor knows when to stop chipping away, a painter realizes a painting is finished, or --as it is with me-- my image completely satisfies my original desire, or vision.

We must FIRST be able to visualize amazingly-detailed and creative images, in our minds. Only then can art be properly performed, and become whole.
